We live in times of great convenience and luxury. Even if you are working for minimum wage in our country, you’ll often have an automobile or access to public transportation that requires very little of your own energy to get around. Most of the people in modern society have sedentary lifestyles spending average of 10 to 15 hours a day sitting in cars, at desk, watching t.v. or browsing on the internet.

Has all of this convenience compromised our health and beauty? Research shows that obese people are far more sedentary than lean people, sitting an average of 150 minutes more per day. Mounting evidence shows that there is a strong and direct correlation between levels of NEAT and body fat composition. While there’s no substitute for a challenging, heart-pumping workout, adding more NEAT into your routine is proven to be beneficial for weight loss and overall health. Here are some ideas for daily NEAT activities that you can incorporate into your life to move more and burn more: . NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. This is the energy we expend each day for everything that is not sleeping, eating, or sports-like activities. We are specifically talking about the non-exercise activities that we would normally perform on a daily basis. Things like walking to your job from your car, washing dishes, doing yard work, playing with your kids, these all things can increase your NEAT. Extended inactivity is actually a depressant for thermogenesis and for your brain. Use these excellent tactics to increase your NEAT time each day and burn more calories: 1. Shift your weight from one foot to the other while waiting in line at the store 2. Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator 3. Take a longer route to walk to your destination 4. Perform calf raises while waiting for your coffee or tea at the café 5. Run with your dog 6. Jog from errand to errand 7. Speed walk through the airport while waiting for your flight 8.
