The Story Of Making A Difference

On a sunny morning, Lord Buddha was strolling by the beach when he noticed the waves were bringing in hundreds of starfish to the shore. As the waves receded, these starfish were getting stranded on the shore. The sun was getting hotter, and these starfish would surely die. Buddha took a few steps, picked up one starfish and threw it back into the water. He picked up another starfish and also threw it back into the water. He did this repeatedly, one starfish at a time. Noticing him was a passerby who couldn't understand what Buddha was doing. He came up to him and asked, "There are hundreds of starfish. How many can you help? What difference does it make?" Buddh took two more steps, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the water. He then turned to the passerby with a smile and said, "It makes a difference to this one." "What difference are we making? Big or small, it does not matter. If everyone made a small difference, we'd end up with a big difference, wouldn't we?"

Read another version of this previously and I must admit, it's one very close to my heart ❤️. Many years back, I found myself in a similar incident when I was helping a poor elderly lady who clearly didn't have any means to support herself. However, an accompanying friend of mine asked me what difference would it make if I helped this one person as there're millions whom we can't help. Then I had simply told him that I'm doing what I can. Really didn't have an appropriate response at that time, just wanted to help that elderly lady. However, this story and it's versions tell us why in the best possible way. Thanks for sharing.
