Before you start with this article, I need to ask all of you, how many of you want your child to be a doctor or engineer? No one right? Because time has changed now, now everyone wants there child to follow their dreams, nobody wants to pressurize them to choose a career option right? But what if I tell you that you're still doing that every single day. We unknowingly put pressure on kids and we are not even aware of it. Kids imitate what they see, hear and watch us do. If we are stressed about being overweight or not fitting into that great outfit or the pressure of looking good in the upcoming family event, these things have a negative impact on our kids. They set in a mindset that looking perfect is a social necessity and as a result of which they develop a fear of gaining weight. Let us discuss the various repercussions it can have on our kids. I had a better understanding of these factors and how they affect adults while working with my clients. Client 1: When I was a young girl my mother would not allow me to have Rice as she was herself was fat, so she was very conscious about the way I look. This would make me hungry and I developed the habit of binge eating outside as I was constrained in my house. I would always feel hungry and I had always the feeling that I wasn’t eating enough. Client 2: Growing up I saw the celebrities and actors looking perfect in their beautiful outfits. My mom and relatives used to say that you have to be thin and pretty in order to get a good husband. The pressure to be slim was so much that I developed a fear of eating (anorexia). I would be scared to eat food. Client 3: My gym trainer told me that there was an easy way to eat what you want and not gain weight. He suggested that after eating you can stick your finger down your throat and throw up all you ate ( Bulimia). My food relationship had become worse. In children and teens, eating disorders can overlap. For example, some children alternate between periods of anorexia and bulimia. Eating disorders typically develop during adolescence or early adulthood. However, they can start in childhood, too. Females are much more vulnerable. Only an estimated 5% to 15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are male. With binge eating, the number rises to 35% male. Children and teens with anorexia have a distorted body image. People with anorexia view themselves as heavy, even when they are dangerously skinny. They are obsessed with being thin and refuse to maintain even a minimally normal weight. By the time they grow up they would have tried everything to be healthy again. Whoever is reading this article would know about quantified nutrition and its benefits. But the big question is are children ready to follow quantified nutrition? Puberty is an extraordinary hormonal event and humans are lucky in that they only have to go through it once. Hormonal changes aare responsible for social, emotional and emotional changes in children. Kids do not like being imposed. They follow their friends more than their family. They would have more trust in the random social media influencer (Keto pills, HARBAL lie, etc) and how they have that perfect figure, rather than following science-backed nutrition. But all is not lost we can develop healthy habits in them. We just have to take care of certain factors 1) Start by watching the portions of food. Let us not deprive children of food, on the contrary instill in them mindful eating. This can be done by watching the quantity of the food that is taken by children, keeping in mind they develop healthy eating habits. 2) Develop an active lifestyle at home by engaging your family in outdoor activities, taking your children for fun sports activities like swimming, football, hiking, and mountain climbing. The motive should be to instill good habits. Just like brushing teeth and taking a bath, doing exercise should become a habit for them. 3) Their food should be protein-rich home-cooked meals. So that they feel satiated for a long period of time and do not indulge in binge eating or develop the habit of eating Junk food. 4) The concept of rewarding them with processed food like Pizza, burger, chocolates should be avoided. This is how children develop the relativity of reward or happiness to this food and they end up being their comfort food which they find solace, whenever they are sad. 5) Lastly and most importantly we ourselves need to be role models to our kids. We should keep working hard on ourselves and keep getting better and better. If our children see that we are disciplined and dedicated then they take pride in us and our achievements. When we achieve our health goals and people around praise parents for their hard work children feel proud, they'll think my mom/dad are superman/woman, they're doing something really amazing and would want to inculcate the same in their lives. Children are the most important aspects of our lives. Our whole lives revolve around their wellbeing. Let us all work towards a better future by helping each other.
