Fitness Gadgets & Tools
When we talk about fitness gadgets, the most popular instrument which comes to our mind is Pedometers/ Activity Tracker. Activity trackers are generally now integrated with the wearable smart watches and smart phone with some add-on features.

These devices not only help in tracking the steps or level of activity, they also help in accurate assessment of other fitness metrics like heart rate, calories burnt, and sleep pattern. While pedometers have existed for decades now, with the advancement in sensory technology, they must only get better and better. However, assessment of heart rate and calorie expenditure is something very new to the world and involves too many complex and dynamic variables. There is a 2017 research study, comparing accuracy of seven commercially available wrist-worn devices in estimating heart rate (HR) and energy expenditure (EE) for activities including sitting, walking, running, and cycling. The study compared the devices with what is the golden standard of estimating HR and EE, that is ECG and Indirect calorimetry, which were used simultaneously. As a conclusion, most wrist-worn devices adequately measure HR in laboratory-based activities, but poorly estimate EE [1] As a practical take away, a fitness tracker can be a great tool to track our activity levels or even our heart rates to some extent. However, when it comes to estimating energy expenditure, their accuracy remains questionable. Further, wearable smart watches are also associated with positive changes in terms of motivation and accountability [2]. So, if it fits your budget, a good fitness tracker, although not essential, is definitely a good investment.
