What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome❓⁣⁣ Compression of the Median Nerve at the wrist at the carpal tunnel. ⁣⁣ Carpal tunnel is basically a narrow pathway of structures such as ligaments and bones at the wrist joint. ⁣⁣ The median nerve supplies sensation to 3 and a half fingers of the hand. The thumb, index, middle and half of ring finger. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Q.What are the symptoms❓⁣⁣ One might experience tingling, burning or numbness in the three and a half fingers which is supplied by the median nerve. The symptoms are worse at night. But it might cause trouble throughout the day if untreated. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Q.What are the cause ❓⁣⁣ 🔸Repetitive stress injury ⁣⁣ 🔸Pregnancy due to fluid retention⁣⁣ 🔸Menopause due to fluid retention⁣⁣ 🔸Cyst or ganglion at the wrist ⁣⁣ 🔸History of trauma or fracture at wrist ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Any of the factors which cause compression, pinching, pressing of the nerve will result in CTS.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Q.How to diagnose CTS ❓⁣⁣ See an orthopedic or physiotherapist to help you diagnose the condition after performing some special test such as Phalen's test. If required EMG & MRI will be advised. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Q.How to manage ❓⁣⁣ 🔹Resting the movements that provoke symptoms.⁣⁣ 🔹Using night splint to provide rest at night.⁣⁣ 🔹Avoid sleeping on the affected hand.⁣⁣ 🔹Apply ice packs to the wrist if you swelling and redness is observed specifically seen in CTS during pregnancy due to fluid retention.⁣⁣ 🔹Try median nerve and tendon glide for 5-10 reps, thrice a day. Hold each position for 2-3 seconds.⁣⁣ 🔹Start working on strengthening the intrinsic muscles & lumbricals of the hand and all the muscles at the wrist once the symptoms subside. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Q. Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome be prevented ❓⁣⁣ YES! If you are a desk worker, you are at a high risk of developing CTS as an occupational hazard. ⁣⁣ In order to prevent it, one must try and to the ergonomics adjustment to avoid compression at the wrist. ⁣⁣ Take frequent breaks in between your constant 8 hours of working and perform some active wrist and finger movements.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⚠️Disclaimer: This health information is for general education purposes only.
