GM Diet

_______________________________________________ here is a diet which is very popular in India which promises weight loss in 7 days and various fitness professionals suggest this diet; I am talking about “GM DIET”. General Motors diet was developed by General Motors in 1985 to help their employees to deal with the weight issues. In General Motors’ diet, there is a fixed pattern you have to eat for 7 days and weight loss is somewhat guaranteed. Sounds amazing, here’s the truth –it sucks. Let’s look at how the GM diet looks – Day 1- Fruits except for banana Day 2- Veggies Day 3-Fruits and Veggies Day 4- Banana, Milk, and Soup Day 5-Brown Rice, tomatoes, lean protein Day 6- Brown Rice, Vegetables, Lean protein Day7- Brown Rice, vegetables, lean protein, Juice There is no restriction on the amount of food in GM diet. Now let me tell you why this diet is not the best. Eating Fewer Calories– The amount of energy (in the form of calories) that the body needs to function while resting for 24 hours is known as the basal metabolic rate or BMR. So even after having no restriction on the amount of food, you will still be eating below BMR because initially in first 4 days, you are eating mainly fruits and vegetables which are very low in calories and full of fiber, which also keeps you full. Eating such fewer calories can have a lot of side effects. Muscle Loss, not Fat loss-You will lose some weight eventually but that weight would mainly consist of your muscle mass and the reason is you will be eating very less or no protein and your body need protein to function properly, so it uses its own protein from the muscle and you will end up losing muscle mass. Losing muscle mass is the worst thing we can do to our body. Sodium Deficiency– In the initials days, salt is restricted in the diet to get rid of water retention. This causes a serious imbalance of electrolytes in the body and that can result in cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure etc Weight Loss is not Substantial– The weight you lose will come back to you when you leave that diet and it is a very short-term fix to your weight issues. So the bottom line is you should ignore this diet and follow quantified nutrition that will help you lose fat in a sustainable way.
