We have heard this coming from gym trainers: “Sweat more to lose FAT” “Switch off the AC and workout” “Wear multiple layers of clothes to increase perspiration”. Is it so simple to lose FAT? If it were, then you wouldn’t find any obese person living in a tropical climate - everyone would have six pack abs! Clearly, fat loss isn’t this simple. Then, where did this notion come from? Let us understand why our body sweats Sweating is natural phenomenon that our body adopts in response to the rise in our core body temperature. As the sweat evaporates from the skin’s surface, our bodies significantly cool down. Increase in sweating could be on account of: any physical activity External Environment Clothing material worn Water level in the body Sweat glands Everyone has a different sweat threshold. Each one of us reacts differently to our environment. During exercise, our body gets warmer as muscles need energy. This energy release process from ATP (energy storehouse) produces heat as a byproduct and that’s what makes you sweat more. However, the amount of sweat has nothing to do with how much fat you have burned or how effective your workout was. So, when someone tells you that "I had a good sweat today“, that only means that their body is trying to maintain their core body temperature and doing what it is supposed to be doing. A study conducted between a group of men and women found that men perspire faster than and twice as much as women, but that has no bearing on fat loss or levels of exercise intensity. Let us understand the origin of this myth The myth was spread across the world when boxing, wrestling and other sports gained prominence. Those athletes need to shed extra few kilos to make a cut in their weight class so that they gain an upper hand on their competitors. Our bodies are composed of 60-75% water. When these athletes sweat, they simply shed water weight and not FAT. In fact, they gain the weight back as soon as they start hydrating themselves. It’s always easier for people to sell half-truths, but what they don’t see are the years of quantified diet and training that these athletes have followed to reach that stage of competition. Even these athletes may suffer from excessive sweating. Combined with restrictive water intake, excessive sweating could lead to hyperthermia, overheating (heatstroke), extreme loss of electrolytes, kidney damage, other cardiovascular related emergencies, and drop in muscular endurance and strength. In the worst case, it can even lead to death! Now you’re wondering: if sweating does not burn FAT, then what does? QUANTIFIED DIET AND TRAINING - focus on these two things to reduce body fat and increase muscle definition. Lifting weights & resistance training are needed if you want to get the body of your dreams. If you enjoy aerobic activity, by all means, keep doing that. At the end of the day, know this: just because you sweated a lot does not mean that your last workout was more effective! Sweat is not necessarily an indication that you have trained hard enough. So, don’t SWEAT it!
