THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL: The Power Of Empathy
As healthcare professionals and fitness & wellness experts, we are on the frontlines as we have to help our clients beat negative mentalities, attitude, convictions, fears, and so many other issues that impact them. Whether we’re helping them complete 12 reps of an exercise or just having a 12 minutes discussion or chat, here’s something that I have realized: BOTH are a form of rehabilitation. It’s not enough to only address the issue at hand, be it a back that hurts or any other ailment. Quite often, there are merely symptoms of something larger at play. You may need to take a step back and address the person as a whole - beginning with a biopsychosocial approach. LISTEN to your Clients. EMPOWER & EDUCATE. This approach needs the co-operation and understanding of both parties - the patient and the expert. As the patient, you need to ensure that your rehab specialist is tuning in to you and that you are being heard! As the expert who is practising and trying to facilitate the patient’s path to recovery, clinical and hands-on abilities are definitely important. However, at the same time, don't pass up those "SOFT SKILLS" Truth be told, there’s nothing SOFT about them. Soft skills are probably some of the hardest skills to learn but if you want to be a well-rounded professional, then you need to invest the time and acquire them. "No one cares about how much you know, unless you can make them realize how much you care.” Among everything, be a human being before being a medical professional!
