Is it good to take an Energy drink before the GYM?
Energy drinks are made to provide you with energy boost and mental alertness/ concentration. To understand the usefulness of an Energy drink in GYM I will break it into its ingredients which are mainly: 1- Caffeine Most important and common constituent of all energy drink is caffeine. How caffeine can be useful in GYM? Caffeine can increase your energy levels and mental focus and thus can help you to perform more efficient workouts or keep you motivated throughout the session. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1356551 If you are new to caffeine, start with a 75mg dose. As per research you can see strength gains at higher doses, 500mg and above, but I would suggest to increase dose in small increments to reach there or stay away from high doses and use it for improving mental focus and energy levels. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20205813 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18708685 A 250-ml can of Red Bull provides 75 mg of caffeine. 2- B Vitamins Energy drinks also contain big doses of B12 and other B vitamins. How B Vitamins can be useful in GYM? B vitamins acts as cofactor for various chemical reactions that convert food we eat to energy(ATP). This doesn’t mean they will give you energy boost. Only if you are deficient in B vitamins then energy drinks can be useful for you for extra energy production else they won’t be of much use. 3- Sugar Energy drinks also contain sugar which can give you some extra carbs for energy production during your workouts. Thus, I would say energy drink can help you with energy production and can improve your concentration during your workouts. I would suggest you can use them but, remember you can build-up tolerance for caffeine after using it for a while. So, I would suggest to cycle the use of energy drinks for your workouts after 2 months or so. Keep below points in mind while you use energy drinks. All points are related to Caffeine: • Caffeine can increase blood pressure and heart rate, so if you suffer from High BP you should avoid energy drinks. • Caffeine has anti-sleep effect and it is recommended to not have it at-least 6 hours before you sleep • Caffeine may lead to caffeine overdose so use energy drinks as per recommendation given at the back label.
