I never understood this urgency of losing weight in 1 week or 2 weeks time period.

I got a call from an old friend yesterday for help who has gained 25 kgs weight in the last 3 months. I thought she has some medical issue and probed her more to understand history. She mentioned that she was following a diet routine given by one of the dietitians and with that, she lost 15 kgs in 5 weeks but since the time she has stopped that diet, her weight has increased drastically and now stands at 80 kgs weight. On probing more when she told me the diet, I was shocked to hear that - 1. Max 4 glasses of water in a day - because more water leads to weight gain 2. Bowl of boiled Moong dal, three times in a day - As explained to her, it was a high protein diet; and boiled because salt leads to water retention and will lead to weight gain 3. 1 cucumber in a day because fibre is important This was actually the diet she took for 5 weeks that made her lose 15 kgs weight and according to her she was so happy with the results that she wanted to continue but as she got bored with boiled Dal and cucumber, she left it in between. And I am so glad that she got bored and didn't continue it otherwise imagine the damage she could have done to herself. I understand that not everyone is a part of Fittr group from Day 1 and so may not be aware of quantified diet or calorie counting, but why do we forget our basics that we have been learning from our primary school days, BALANCED DIET. What happens to the importance of all those Carbs, Protein, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals, Water that we have been learning from ages. You don't need to be a nutritionist or an expert in any subject to know all this. This is basic science which we all learn in our early years of school but forget to apply when it comes to weight loss because of a change of priorities. I have one simple piece of advice for those who go after these extreme measures, "at the end of the day your overall health matters". Weight loss or good aesthetics is not the only criteria to measure your fitness, there are many other factors that are important. Understand the deficiency of all the nutrients she faced in the last 5 weeks. And top of that, try to understand the mental agony and trauma she is going through after re-gaining 25 kgs in the last 3 months. Now ask yourself, Is it worth it? Next time if you think of taking any extreme measures, make sure you focus on a bigger picture rather than immediate gains because Shortcuts never lead to a successful and a sustainable path.
