What to do when your mind is disturbed. This is a story of The Thirsty Buddha and gives us an important message on what to do when our mind is disturbed. Once, Buddha was traveling with a few of his followers. While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake.” The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?” So he came back and told Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.” After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake. The disciple found that the mud had settled down and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha. Buddha looked the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said, “See what you did to make the water clean? You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own and you have clear water. Your mind is like that too! You should not get caught up in thinking that your mind is disturbed. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put any efforts to calm it down. It will happen. It will be effortless.” Having ‘Peace of Mind’ is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process! What’s the lesson from the above story? When the mind is disturbed, it tends to blame everything under the sun. Some may also think that they are perfect in all the aspects and the problem is with others. This ultimately leads to the non-correction of one’s own mistakes. If the mind is disturbed, there may emerge a tendency for baseless grudges and anger. Blaming all these feelings will further multiply the disturbance. Instead, if we take things rationally and understand the reason as to what causes the disturbance of mind, then we have won half the battle and the remaining half will be won through our efforts. Failure is not the end of life; rather it is a means to learn your lesson, correct your mistakes and improve yourself. This is an opportunity for self-improvement. Life is an inevitable mix of pain and pleasure. No one on earth is free from pain in life. As human beings, we all have to face many kinds of incidents. We will experience pain and anguish. Pain is inevitable. But suffering is optional. Your attitude towards your life is the key to a peaceful, undisturbed mind. Here's a tip on what to do when you feel your mind is disturbed: First, become aware of the situation & completely accept it for what it is. Then ask yourself if the situation is ‘completely’ in your control. Most of the time, you'll realize it is not. Ask yourself, "What can I do about it?" The answer is mostly - not much!
