Let’s find out It is well known by many of us that the concentration of Testosterone in men is way higher than in women (approximately 10-15 times more than that in women). And testosterone is known to be one of the major contributors to Muscle growth as it drives Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS), which is a process of adding new muscle proteins. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 : https://www.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.1152/jappl.1922.214.171.1248 So, it is commonly misunderstood that women have difficulty to add muscle mass. In fact, a study showed that there is a drastic increase in testosterone levels post-exercise in men making it almost 45 times higher concentrations than that in women (𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐢𝐜 𝟏). However, it is the muscle protein synthesis and net protein balance which is going to define whether an individual is going to add muscle. And the same study investigated the MPS response after the exercise session and protein consumption in both men and women and it was elevated similarly from basal levels for both of them (2.3 times in men and 2.7 times in women). (𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐢𝐜 𝟐) With this, we can conclude that the post-exercise rises in testosterone levels in men did not give them the advantage of gaining more muscle when compared to women. And women have the same ability to build muscle as that of men.
